The Birmingham Brummies have signed former Premiership winner Michael Palm Toft as a temporary replacement for Steve Worrall.
With the skipper sidelined for up to a month with an ongoing illness, the Curtis Sport Brummies have moved to bring in the experienced Dane who has himself recently returned from injury.
Club CEO Nigel Tolley said: “Firstly, we wish Stevie a speedy recovery.
“His case of Labyrinthitis certainly sounds a nasty one and having listened to doctors, he needs to take a month or so off.
“We know we struggle running rider replacement as a team and there are a lot of busy Premiership racenights on the horizon.
“So rather than stressing about guest bookings, as a management team our preference was to sign a temporary replacement for Stevie.
“Michael was someone who I spoke to in general conversation when he visited Perry Barr a few weeks ago and his general approach to his racing is something I like.
“He made a successful return from injury for Scunthorpe the other week and he was really keen to get back into the top league.
“He’s got that opportunity now so hopefully he can bring a bit of consistency to that second string position and I think he’ll gel into the team quite well.
“Yes he comes in on a 4.65 average but as Ipswich, King’s Lynn and Sheffield will tell you, riders on heat-leader averages just aren’t out there at the minute and that’s why we’re currently way under the limit.
“We look forward to welcoming Michael into the Brummies team though and we’ll look at where the team are at when Stevie has recovered from his illness.”
Palm Toft will make his debut when the Brummies host champions Sheffield on Monday (July 22, 7.30pm) where Tom Brennan, who bagged himself a gold medal last weekend as part of Great Britain’s Speedway of Nations winning squad, will take up the captaincy in the meantime.
