Rowe, who will be standing in for the injured Nico Covatti, will be one of three ex-Pirates riders competing for the Gladiators as Kyle Newman and Joe Thompson also rode for the Dorset side last season.

Poole promoter Dan Ford said: “Our meetings against Plymouth always have the something extra about them, and when we look at the fixture coming up then our old adversary Garry May has just added a bit more spice to it by booking Anders as a guest.

“Although there are no hard feelings between us and the riders we had to release from last season, I am sure that Kyle, Joe and even though he is only guesting. Anders, will be well up for the challenge.”

Glasgow reserve Lee Complin has had his racing licence suspended by the Speedway Control Bureau after producing a non-negative result to a routine pre-meeting drugs and alcohol test.

The 39-year-old Yorkshireman was withdrawn from Saturday’s meeting following the random test and in his absence the Tigers slipped to a six-point defeat at a Berwick side inspired by number one Lewi Kerr.

Kerr led from the front with 13 points as a Bandits which scored solidly throughout maintained its unbeaten start to 2024, inflicting three emphatic defeats on opposite number Chris Harris in the process.

Kerr set the tone on a track which produced some excellent racing despite the appalling weather in the build up to Saturday’s meeting with a tapes to flag victory over Glasgow’s former GP star in the opening heat of the BSN Series qualifier.

Freddy Hodder and Bastian Borke took full advantage of Complin’s absence for a heat two 5-1 and Bandits fans, who had suffered 13 consecutive defeats to the Tigers, were in dreamland.

They were brought swiftly back down to earth as former Bandits Paul Starke and Leon Flint showed they still know the fastest way around Shielfield Park and then Steve Worrall kept Rory Schlein at bay and Ace Pijper pipped Borke for third place to level the scores.

Danyon Hume ended a string of drawn heats by roaring under James Pearson and with Borke comfortably third Berwick were in front again.

They were battling hard to keep it too, first Drew Kemp and Jye Etheridge

Harris masterfully created an opening for Pearson to join him for a match-levelling 5-1 in heat 11 and Berwick fans, who had seen their side lose the last 13 matches against Glasgow, began to get an unpleasant feeling of impending déjà vu.

But Etheridge and Borke had other ideas and powered from the gate in 12, Flint’s determined efforts making no impression on the Berwick duo.

Kerr and Schlein then roared clear in the crucial 13, Harris producing a trademark cutback to find his way past the Australian but Kerr was off into the distance and Berwick fans began to believe.

Tigers’ boss Cami Brown threw his skipper into heat 14 as a tactical sub and the Cornishman obliged with a comfortable win.

Behind him Kemp tucked in for second place but the real action was at the back as Borke buzz-bombed Starke and was just half a wheel from catching him at the chequered flag.

Kerr settled any nerves the home fans may have had by passing Harris and roaring off into the distance in heat 15.
Edinburgh are next at Shielfield before the Bandits take to the road in the remaining BSN qualifiers.

Aussie star Allen top-scored with 13+1, dropping his only point of the meeting to the Bears’ Charles Wright in the final race, whilst reserve Ablitt was very impressive with 12 from five rides.

The Scorpions won the meeting despite losing Michael Palm Toft due to an early spill when he looped out of the gate in Heat 3, whilst Wright was fortunate to escape injury when he collected the fallen Kyle Howarth in Heat 13, before resuming to total 16 points.

Scunthorpe manager David Howe said: “I would have preferred an easier meeting tactical-wise for my first one as a team manager, rather than having Tofty withdrawing.

“But I’m very happy, and it’s what I expected from the boys.”

Redcar boss Gavin Parr said: “I think they’ve all had decent races and bad races, and gate 4 was so much better than everywhere else. But Scunthorpe have just been the better side on the night without doubt.”

The fixture will mark Cheetahs’ first home meeting of the club’s third campaign of its new era – and Team Manager Peter Schroeck is eyeing a response following a Good Friday reverse in Dorset.

Cheetahs are unchanged with Sam Masters leading Oxford’s charge with fans’ favourite Scott Nicholls confirmed to ride in the middle order. Henry Atkins, Cameron Heeps and Jordan Jenkins are confirmed in the middle order with teenagers Ashton Boughen and Luke Killeen at reserve.

Schroeck expects a strong challenge from Pirates when tapes rise, but he’s backed his side to return to form and get their first points on the board.

“Friday is behind us now,” said Schroeck. “We’ve moved on, and our focus is on a big first home meeting of the season for the Cheetahs.

“All the boys built a really strong rapport with our supporters, so starting the season with seven riders who have all previously represented Cheetahs is a real plus for us.

“We hope to use that track knowledge to our advantage against a Poole side which will be brimming with confidence and determined to complete the double.

“We’ve some superb match ups with Poole since the beginning of our regeneration campaign. It’s a great rivalry to have and we’re looking forward to seeing the terraces busy again for what is a must-win meeting if we want to retain hopes of qualifying for the (BSN Series) semi finals.”
