Redcar Bears have advanced to the 2025 BSN Series Final following the abandonment of their semi-final second leg clash with the Glasgow Tigers at the ECCO Arena on Sunday, October 12.

The meeting was halted prior to Heat 15 after an incident in Heat 14, with the aggregate scores level at that point. As it was not possible to determine a winner on track, the Speedway Control Bureau (SCB) confirmed that the tie would be decided under Regulation 012.1.26 – Abandonment, which states:

“The team who scored the most heat advantages (5-0, 5-1, 4-2, 3-2, 3-0 in no particular order) over the two legs will be awarded the aggregate win.”

After reviewing both legs of the semi-final, the SCB confirmed the following breakdown of heat advantages:

Redcar: 8 x 4-2s (4 in the first leg, 4 in the second leg)

Glasgow: 1 x 5-1 and 6 x 4-2s (a 5-1 and 3 x 4-2s in the first leg, and 3 x 4-2s in the second leg)

This meant Redcar held one more heat advantage overall and were therefore declared winners of the tie, progressing to the BSN Series Final.

In their statement, the SCB added:

“There is no alternative with the scores level on aggregate at the time of the BSN Series semi-final being abandoned, and the result of the tie will have to be decided by SCB Regulation 012.1.26.

The SCB wishes all the people involved in the incident at Redcar during Heat 14 a speedy recovery.”

Incident and Response

During Heat 14, an incident occurred which saw a bike clear the safety fence and strike the secondary barrier beyond it. As a result, three supporters required medical attention from the on-site medical team.

Redcar Speedway later issued an update, confirming:

“Two supporters were taken to James Cook University Hospital for precautionary checks. We are pleased to confirm that both were discharged later that evening, and all three supporters are now safely at home with no serious injuries.

Redcar Speedway would like to extend our sincere thanks to the attending medical personnel from Medics UK and our dedicated volunteer staff for their prompt and professional response to the situation.”

Further details regarding the final and fixture arrangements will be confirmed by the Speedway Control Bureau in due course.

Dirt Hub wish everyone in the incident all the best, and we wish them a speedy recovery

The Glasgow Tigers will have five new faces in 2025 as they bid to return to title contention in the Cab Direct Championship.

Last year’s champions missed out on the play-offs this time around, and only skipper Chris Harris and Leon Flint will return for next season’s efforts.

The Tigers have swooped to sign experienced racer Kyle Howarth along with rising talents Dan Thompson and Ashton Boughen to complete their top five, whilst youngsters Freddy Hodder and Max Perry come in at reserve in an all-British line-up.

Manager Cami Brown said: “This is a team bursting with talent and potential, we are very excited for the start of the 2025 campaign.

“We have built a side oozing with excitement because priority No.1 is delivering exciting racing and top-class entertainment for the fans at Ashfield.

“But we also believe we have a team with a potent mix of youth and experience. It was designed by choice to be all British, homegrown is something we have yearned for in recent times.

“We had our first team camp in Glasgow on Monday and the spirit seems really strong. But next up will be the boot camp in February to get the boys in the best shape possible before the season starts in April.”

GLASGOW have been allocated an FIM SGP2 (World Under-21 Championship) Qualifier next season.

The meeting will take place on Saturday May 24, 2025, and will feature many of the sport’s top youngsters, including representation from Great Britain, as they battle for places in the three-round SGP2 series.

The club have staged several FIM events over recent years, including the Grand Prix Challenge in 2022 and GP Qualifiers in two earlier seasons.

And now after further investment into the venue, including a new air fence, Ashfield will once again be up to FIM regulation standards enabling the staging of prestigious international events.

Great Britain Youth boss Neil Vatcher said: “Following the announcement, I am delighted that the FIM have awarded Glasgow the SGP2 Qualifier.

“Firstly, I’m pleased for the Glasgow promotion and owners, who as we all know have invested so much into the stadium, and it is a venue now that is worthy of hosting such big International events.

“And secondly, from a selfish point of view, I’m again delighted that we can host such an event on home soil.

“This will hopefully give the British riders who are nominated for this event the very best opportunity to qualify for the 2025 SGP2 series.”

The Glasgow event is one of three SGP2 qualifiers on May 24, with the others at Pardubice (Czech Rep) and Debrecen (Hungary). The 2025 SGP2 series takes place at Malilla (Sweden), Riga (Lativa) and Vojens (Denmark).

The Berwick Bandits and Glasgow Tigers went to battle at Shielfield Park on Saturday in both sides opening BSN Series fixture.

Glasgow reserve Lee Complin has had his racing licence suspended by the Speedway Control Bureau after producing a non-negative result to a routine pre-meeting drugs and alcohol test.

The 39-year-old Yorkshireman was withdrawn from Saturday’s meeting following the random test and in his absence the Tigers slipped to a six-point defeat at a Berwick side inspired by number one Lewi Kerr.

Kerr led from the front with 13 points as a Bandits which scored solidly throughout maintained its unbeaten start to 2024, inflicting three emphatic defeats on opposite number Chris Harris in the process.

Kerr set the tone on a track which produced some excellent racing despite the appalling weather in the build up to Saturday’s meeting with a tapes to flag victory over Glasgow’s former GP star in the opening heat of the BSN Series qualifier.

Freddy Hodder and Bastian Borke took full advantage of Complin’s absence for a heat two 5-1 and Bandits fans, who had suffered 13 consecutive defeats to the Tigers, were in dreamland.

They were brought swiftly back down to earth as former Bandits Paul Starke and Leon Flint showed they still know the fastest way around Shielfield Park and then Steve Worrall kept Rory Schlein at bay and Ace Pijper pipped Borke for third place to level the scores.

Danyon Hume ended a string of drawn heats by roaring under James Pearson and with Borke comfortably third Berwick were in front again.

They were battling hard to keep it too, first Drew Kemp and Jye Etheridge

Harris masterfully created an opening for Pearson to join him for a match-levelling 5-1 in heat 11 and Berwick fans, who had seen their side lose the last 13 matches against Glasgow, began to get an unpleasant feeling of impending déjà vu.

But Etheridge and Borke had other ideas and powered from the gate in 12, Flint’s determined efforts making no impression on the Berwick duo.

Kerr and Schlein then roared clear in the crucial 13, Harris producing a trademark cutback to find his way past the Australian but Kerr was off into the distance and Berwick fans began to believe.

Tigers’ boss Cami Brown threw his skipper into heat 14 as a tactical sub and the Cornishman obliged with a comfortable win.

Behind him Kemp tucked in for second place but the real action was at the back as Borke buzz-bombed Starke and was just half a wheel from catching him at the chequered flag.

Kerr settled any nerves the home fans may have had by passing Harris and roaring off into the distance in heat 15.
Edinburgh are next at Shielfield before the Bandits take to the road in the remaining BSN qualifiers.

Bandits: Lewis Kerr 13+1, Danyon Hume 6, Jye Etheridge 7, Drew Kemp 6+1, Rory Schlein 8, Freddy Hodder 2+1, Bastian Borke 6+1

Tigers: Chris Harris 15, James Pearson 4+1, Leon Flint 8+2, Paul Starke 5+1, Steve Worrall 6+1, Lee Complin withdrawn, Ace Pijper 4

Berwick boss Stewart Dickson has challenged new signing Drew Kemp to make this the year he jump starts his career.

As the Bandits begin their BSN Series campaign with the visit of Glasgow to Shielfield Park on Saturday (7pm) Kemp will be looking to put the

series of machinery problems which restricted his scoring in last weekend’s Border Trophy series against Workington behind him.

While fellow Berwick debutants Freddy Hodder, Bastian Borke and Danyon Hume racked up the points and race wins, Kemp was down on power, although he still managed 11 points over the two matches.

Dickson also manages the 21-year-old at Premiership Leicester where he has also endured a similarly frustrating start to the season.

But the Scot believes the Berwick backroom staff has identified the source of Kemp’s misfiring machinery and challenged the three-time British Under-19 champion to take his career onto the next level in 2024.

“Drew needs to find a consistency which will see his career progress,” Dickson said.

“He has been at the same level for the past couple of seasons and I think this is the year he has to push on.

“Most riders have what I call a jump year, the one where they concentrate on stepping up to the next level. 2024 needs to be Drew’s jump year.”

His next challenge is to get among the points against a Glasgow Tigers side packed with former Bandits. And the city slickers arrive having won every one of the last 13 meetings between the sides in all competitions.

Chris Harris and Berwick-born Leon Flint are the Bandits’ previous two captains while Lee Complin and Paul Starke both had hugely successful spells in the yellow and black while reserve Ace Pijper began his professional career with the club’s National Development side, the Bullets, as a 15-year-old.

Even those with no Berwick connection – Steve Worrall and James Pearson – have scored freely there in the past.

“While not being disrespectful to Workington or the Border Trophy, they were useful warm-ups but our season starts here,” Dickson said.

“I don’t expect us to score 56 points again this week – but wouldn’t turn it down – but we have the benefit of two meetings under our belts and there were very promising signs last weekend.

“It was a real seven-man effort against Workington. Lewi (Kerr) and Rory (Schlein) had a middle of the road night on Saturday but the other five scored 45 points between them. On Sunday they very much led from the front and saw us over the line in Cumbria.

“That is how it needs to be against the Tigers. Everyone knows their job and if we do it to the best of our ability then we are a match for any side, including the reigning play-off champions.

“Glasgow come with plenty of track knowledge and that winning streak behind them but this is a new Bandits side and one which doesn’t carry the scars of previous losses.

“One thing for certain is that Glasgow fans will travel in their hordes and there will be a great atmosphere inside the stadium.”

Bandits: Lewi Kerr, Danyon Hume, Jye Etheridge, Drew Kemp, Rory Schlein, Freddy Hodder, Bastian Borke

Tigers: Chris Harris, James Pearson, Leon Flint, Paul Starke, Steve Worrall, Lee Complin, Ace Pijper
