This will be Jakobsen’s Speedway GP debut after he served as a non-riding track reserve in the 2021 and 2024 SGP rounds at Vojens.

Australia enjoyed a historic weekend at the British Speedway Grand Prix in Manchester as Brady Kurtz emerged from the National Speedway Stadium with the World Championship lead following two memorable nights of action.

The Belle Vue Aces star claimed victory in Saturday’s ATPI FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain – Manchester R4 after an incredible charge from the back in the final, while fellow Australian Max Fricke had already topped Friday night’s podium as Australia underlined its growing strength on the world stage.

The weekend began with one of the most memorable results in Speedway GP history as Fricke led an Australian clean sweep of the podium in Round 3. Fricke ended a four-year wait for a Speedway GP victory ahead of Kurtz and Jack Holder, making Australia only the second nation after Poland to lock out all three podium positions at a Grand Prix.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-4991349668748061"

Having recovered from a last-place finish in his opening ride, Fricke remained unbeaten for the rest of the evening and mastered difficult rain-affected conditions to secure his third career Speedway GP victory.

The Leicester Lions racer described the moment as particularly special given he shared the podium with riders he has competed against since childhood.

Friday’s success moved Fricke into championship contention, but it was Kurtz who would leave Manchester with the biggest prize.

Team Fricke.
After finishing second on Friday, the Australian returned on Saturday determined to go one better. In a dramatic final, Kurtz found himself at the back of the field before capitalising as Michael Jepsen Jensen and Bartosz Zmarzlik battled for the lead. Spotting an opening, Kurtz swept through to snatch victory and send the Manchester crowd into celebration.

The win completed an outstanding weekend for the Australian, who scored 39 points from a possible 44 across the two rounds.

“I have been in all the finals in Manchester now and hadn’t managed to get the win before,” said Kurtz. “I learned a lot from Friday’s round and we were much better on Saturday.”

The result saw Kurtz move to the top of the Speedway GP World Championship standings on 65 points, three clear of reigning champion Bartosz Zmarzlik.

While Kurtz celebrated a dream weekend, Zmarzlik endured mixed fortunes. The Pole crashed out of Friday night’s final but bounced back to finish third on Saturday, ensuring he remains firmly in the title fight heading into the next round in Wroclaw.

Danish star Michael Jepsen Jensen also enjoyed his best result of the season with second place on Saturday. Racing his first full Speedway GP campaign since 2015, the former world champion moved up to fourth in the standings and continues to build momentum after an encouraging return to the series.

Jack Holder also leaves Manchester in a strong position after another consistent weekend. Following third place on Friday and a fourth-place finish in Saturday’s final, the Australian sits third in the championship on 55 points and remains firmly in contention.

With four rounds completed, the title race is beginning to take shape. Kurtz now leads the standings ahead of Zmarzlik, while Holder, Jepsen Jensen and Fricke have all strengthened their positions following a weekend that belonged to Australia.

Great Britain racer Robert Lambert is determined to crank up his World Championship medal quest with a huge ATPI FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain – Manchester on Friday and Saturday.

Lambert joins wild card Tom Brennan in flying the home flag in Britain’s biggest speedway event as rounds three and four of the 2026 Speedway GP series take place at the National Speedway Stadium.

With 44 championship points up for grabs over two high-stakes evenings, including four in Friday’s sprint race at the afternoon Qualifying session, Lambert is determined to improve on the six points he scored at the FIM Speedway GP of Czech Republic – Prague on May 23.

PHOTO: Taylor Lanning

The two-time British champion started his series with a final appearance at the WWK Schwaiger & Partner FIM Speedway GP of Germany – Landshut on May 2, and Lambert is currently sixth in the standings on 20 points – 12 short of series leader Bartosz Zmarzlik.

As he bids to close the gap, he also knows there will be a weight of expectation from the British fans on his shoulders in Manchester – scene of his two FIM Speedway of Nations World Championship wins with GB in 2021 and 2024.

Lambert said: “There is always going to be pressure, I want to succeed and do well. As I said at the beginning of the season, the goal is to try and get a medal again in the GP and that stays the same. If you have a couple of good rounds and some consistent ones, you are going to be up there. We need to keep our finger on the pulse and not let the top pack move further away because that makes it much harder. We are fully focused on the coming rounds, and hopefully we can pull something out of the bag.

“I think after the performance in Prague, I want to do a bit better. Missing out on getting into the LCQs is not what I want. But I am going to Manchester open-minded, positive to do well and put on a good show for the British fans.

“It’s nice for the British fans to see me racing in the UK. For some of them, that’s the only time in the year when they can watch me race. Having the fans’ support is massive. I am looking forward to that, and obviously I have experience around Manchester.”

With two Speedway GP rounds in as many days, it’s a critical weekend for every rider’s medal and 2027 qualification hopes. But racing two of the biggest meetings of his season in such close proximity is no problem for Lambert.

He said: “It’s no worry in terms of preparation or being ready for two meetings. Sometimes we have GPs and then Polish league the next day. That can be even more hectic and full-on than having two meetings in one place. I am going there to do well and get as many points as I can from this weekend.”

Lambert is joined in the line-up by the likes of six-time Speedway GP world champion Zmarzlik, who won night two of the double-header in Manchester last year. With 32 championship points, he is one clear of fellow Polish star Kacper Woryna, who has 31 and won the opening round in Landshut on his full-time Speedway GP debut.

Also in action is third-placed Brady Kurtz, captain of host club Belle Vue, who has 26 points and reached the final of both Manchester SGPs last year. Prague winner Leon Madsen and Aussie ace Jack Holder are tied on 21 in fourth and fifth place respectively.

Sixth-placed Lambert also takes on British talent Brennan, who joined him in GB’s gold medal-winning SON sides at the National Speedway Stadium.

The FIM British Speedway GP wild card is normally awarded to the winner of the British Championship Final. But with that competition not taking place until August 15 this season, Brennan was nominated for this weekend’s Manchester double-header.

He admits: “It was honestly something I didn’t expect with us not having the British Final. But at the same time, I feel I deserve my spot. I am happy. I am ready. It should be really good.”

Brennan has his sights set on achieving the top-10 finish needed to fight for a spot in the final via the last-chance qualifiers. He said: “I would love to make an LCQ. The ultimate aim is to try and get into the LCQ. I’ll probably sleep well if I can do that.

“In terms of expectations and pressure, we’re going into it with an open mind. I’ve had a bit of an off-and-on start to the year. It’s a really cool chance to show and remind people that I can be at that top level. I just want to mix it up and have some good racing. I want to see the British fans go as crazy as they can.”

Monster Energy will step up its involvement in the FIM Speedway Grand Prix series as they join forces with global promoter Mayfield Sports Events to launch the Monster Energy Triple Crown for 2026.

MSE has reached an exciting multi-year agreement with Monster Energy to continue its long association with the SGP series, which stretches back to 2012. They will serve as presenting sponsor of the 2026 FIM Speedway World Cup and official energy drink of Speedway GP.

Monster Energy will continue to play a very active role in enhancing the fan experience at Speedway GP events, with the Monster Energy Girls returning to the start line for 2026.

And, for the first time ever, both riders and fans have the chance to win prizes in the brand-new Monster Energy Triple Crown, which will be contested across the three Polish Speedway GP events in Wroclaw on June 20, Lodz on August 1 and Torun on September 26.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-4991349668748061"

Riders’ race points from their five heat rides at each of these three rounds will be added together, with the highest scorer receiving an exclusive Monster Energy Triple Crown trophy after the final round in Torun.

It’s a competition with echoes of the sport’s one-off FIM Speedway World Final era pre-1995, which saw riders compete over a straight five rides for the sport’s biggest prize, with no semi-finals or finals.

The stakes will also be high for fans as they battle it out on the Monster Energy reaction test machine in our Polish Speedway GP fanzones.

The fans that set the fastest times in Wroclaw and Lodz will win tickets to the FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Torun, where they will face the fan who clocks the quickest reaction time in the fanzone at the Marian Rose Motoarena.

All three fans will compete in a final showdown to set the most rapid reaction time, with some coaching from our Monster Energy athletes, and the winner earns an exclusive VIP trip to the Monster Energy VIP Compound in Valencia to watch a huge weekend of two-wheel motorsport action in November, courtesy of Monster Energy.

Mayfield Sports Events founder Richard Coleman is delighted to join forces with Monster Energy to elevate the Speedway GP experience in 2026 and beyond. He said: “Monster Energy has become so much more than a sponsor for our sport and its fans – they are an integral part of the Speedway GP experience.

“Their SGP Fanzone activities are a great way of bringing the sport to its fans, and we are delighted to welcome the Monster Energy Girls back on to the start line for 2026.

“MSE and Monster Energy will look to build and develop our partnership to move Speedway GP and the sport of speedway forward under the new FIM Speedway promotion of MSE.

“We would like to say a special thanks to Monster Energy’s Joe Parsons, whose limitless passion for our sport is hugely appreciated by the MSE team as we strive to deliver fan-focused events. The Monster Energy Triple Crown is another fantastic initiative, and we cannot wait to see which rider takes home the trophy after the final round in Torun, and indeed, which of our fast-gating fans will be heading to Valencia.”

Joe Parsons, Director of Special Projects at Monster Energy, added: “We are thrilled to level up our long-standing partnership with Mayfield Sports Events through the launch of the Monster Energy Triple Crown.

“Poland has some of the most passionate speedway fans in the world, and by introducing a brand-new competitive stakes element for both riders and fanzone attendees, we are bringing an unprecedented level of energy to the 2026 SGP series.”

Robert Lambert and Kai Huckenbeck led home their rivals in Saturday’s concluding two 2026 FIM Speedway Grand Prix Qualifying rounds – staged at Žarnovica in Slovakia and Glasgow in Great Britain – to book their places in the FIM SGP World Championship Challenge.

With the top five from both Žarnovica and Glasgow joining the top five from the first round at Abensberg in Germany earlier in the week, the fifteen qualifiers – who will be fighting for four priceless places in the 2027 FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship (SGP) – have now been decided for the showdown at Terenzano in Italy on 25 July.

The action got under way in the afternoon at the Speedway Stadium Žarnovica where Australia’s Jaimon Lidsey picked up the first win of the programme ahead of Oliver Berntzon from Sweden before Latvian Andzejs Lebedevs – who was fourth in last season’s FIM SGP World Championship Challenge – won from Czech racer Adam Bubba Bednar.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-4991349668748061"
data-ad-slot="6376928783"
data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

British star Lambert then picked up an important early win ahead of the hotly-tipped pairing of Polish racer Kacper Woryna – who sits second in the SGP standings after two rounds – and Danish rival Michael Jepsen Jensen, who were second and fifth in the 2025 FIM SGP World Championship Challenge, with Italy’s Felipe Nicolas Covatti completing the opening block of racing with victory chased by home favourite Martin Vaculik.

Vaculik had the passionate fans on their feet with victory in his second Heat and Jepsen Jensen and Woryna then both claimed their first wins of the afternoon before Lambert dropped a point against Lidsey.

Following further wins for Woryna, Lambert and Lebedevs, Bednar then forced Lidsey to drop a point resulting in a three-way tie for the lead between Woryna, Lambert and Lidsey with two blocks remaining.

Lambert then made it three wins from four starts followed by further victories for Lebedevs, Jepsen Jensen and Lidsey, leaving the British and Australian riders tied at the top on eleven points, one clear of Lebedevs and two ahead of Woryna with Vaculik’s score of eight putting him in an all-important fifth place.

Victory in his fifth Heat ahead of Lebedevs pulled Jepsen Jensen back into contention as the Latvian confirmed his place at Terenzano and Bednar, with his second win, also kept his hopes of progressing alive. Lambert then rubber-stamped his appearance in Italy with a fourth victory as a retirement ended Vaculik’s hopes and the twenty-eight-year-old – SGP silver medallist in 2024 – was guaranteed the top step of the podium when Lidsey followed Woryna home in the final Heat, with both riders making the cut for the FIM SGP World Championship Challenge.

The final place in Terenzano went to Jepsen Jensen following a run-off with Bednar for fifth before Lebedevs defeated Woryna in a run-off for third.

With the five riders from Žarnovica decided, focus switched to Glasgow where the final five places were on the line and the home supporters were given good reason to cheer when, following early wins for Australian Jack Holder and Germany’s Huckenbeck, British favourites Adam Ellis and Chris Harris also claimed victories in their opening Heats.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-4991349668748061"

Huckenbeck took his second win of the night ahead of Poland’s Piotr Pawlicki – who had followed Harris across the line first time out – and Frederik Jakobsen from Denmark won from 2022 SGP bronze medallist Maciej Janowski before Harris beat Holder and twenty-four-year-old rising British star Anders Rowe led home Jonas Knudsen.

After starting with two third places, Victor Palovaara from Sweden claimed his first win of the night chased by Ellis – who was slipping out of contention following a no-score in his second Heat – and Huckenbeck took a point from Harris before Holder, who is currently fifth in SGP, beat Rowe and Jakobsen defeated his compatriot Knudsen.

Pointless through the opening three Heats, Norway’s Lasse Fredriksen took a consolation victory before Poland’s Janowski won from Rowe, Huckenbeck maintained his one-hundred per cent record ahead of Holder and Palovaara came out on top of a battle with Harris to set up a dramatic final block.

Rowe signed off with a win to ensure his progression to Terenzano where he will be joined by Holder – who made the cut with a second behind Britain’s Tom Brennan – and Huckenbeck who completed his maximum to sail through and after Holder had won a run-off for second with Rowe, Jakobsen and Harris claimed the final two qualifying positions following a run-off with Janowski.

Polish racer Kacper Woryna admits he has some way to go to match the achievements of legendary grandfather Antoni Woryna after racing to glory on his full-time Speedway GP debut in Germany on Saturday.

The 29-year-old stormed to an all-action victory at the WWK Schwaiger & Partner FIM Speedway GP of Germany – Landshut – months after winning his place on the sport’s biggest stage at the 2025 FIM SGP Challenge in Holsted, Denmark last August.

Woryna took the chequered flag in the final to prevent Great Britain racer Dan Bewley, winner of five straight heats, from becoming the first rider to go unbeaten in a Speedway GP since Leon Madsen raced to a seven-ride maximum in Torun on October 5, 2019. Six-time world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik finished third, with GB star Robert Lambert in fourth place.

It has been an incredible start to 2026 for Woryna, who completed a huge move to PGE Ekstraliga giants Lublin over the winter and recently won Poland’s prestigious Golden Helmet meeting in Opole on April 6.

That win saw him follow in the tyre treads of his grandfather Antoni, who won the event twice in 1967 and 1971. Woryna senior also became Poland’s first-ever FIM Speedway World Championship medallist, when he bagged bronze in Gothenburg in 1966 – a feat he repeated in Wroclaw in 1970.

While Kacper knows he has some way to go to follow in his idol’s footsteps, he was elated to honour his memory with a remarkable win in Landshut.

He said: “Obviously, it’s really something special for me. I knew I was competing in Speedway GP 60 years after that first bronze medal happened, and it’s special.

“My grandpa was a legend. You can’t really beat what he has achieved in speedway. I am not trying to compete with what he has achieved, but I have always said it is a privilege to have the same surname at least. I am going to try to maybe, maybe, in some percentage, level up with him with my achievements. I don’t think it is possible really, but I will definitely try.

“I was five when he died. The only memory I have of him was when he took the side wheels off my mini bicycle when I was learning to cycle at three or four. That’s one memory that has stuck with me – he just took the side wheels off and off I went.”

Team Woryna.
Kacper’s two-wheeled career started there, and it reached new heights on a dramatic night in Landshut. “I can’t explain how it feels to win on my debut like that,” he said. “I didn’t expect it to happen when I got there in the morning. Obviously, we work for things like this to happen, but speedway is a really dynamic sport, and you have to expect the unexpected at all times. That was one thing I didn’t expect.”

Woryna is elated with a strong start to 2026. He said: “It has been really, really good. These are all the things we have worked for – not only during the winter, but last season.

“For me, it has been a build-up over the past couple of years. With all the people that you don’t see behind the scenes, it’s all possible. This beginning of the season has been good for me. But it’s only the beginning and there are months to go. I will definitely be working hard to keep it up. I will keep my head down and do my best.”

The man in gold – Kacper Woryna.
Woryna became the first wearer of the Speedway GP Golden Race Jacket, which has been reintroduced for 2026, for the first time since Aussie great Jason Crump was crowned a triple SGP world champion in 2009.

“I have always liked the colour gold,” he smiled. “I wasn’t brave enough to have it on my race suit like Bartek. Maybe I can borrow some! I am pretty pleased with this.”

British action man Bewley blazed to a 15-point, five-ride maximum in the heats, qualifying automatically for the final with a ride to spare. Remarkably, he still found the desire to storm from last to first in an extraordinary heat 19.

The Cumbrian was rightly content to start the season by finishing second in Landshut – matching the 18-point haul he scored there in 2025.

But he was also gutted to be denied the Holy Grail of a Speedway GP maximum – a result similar to that of Australian rider Troy Batchelor, who won his first six rides at the 2014 FIM Danish Speedway GP in Copenhagen, only to finish second in the final.

He said: “I reminded myself of Batch Attack when he did something similar in Copenhagen. He was on fire that night and I felt about as good as him.

“The track was what it was. There was a bit of bouncing around and I enjoyed it, to be fair. It’s not a bad start to the year. Congrats to Kacper on his first win. I am looking forward to the next few meetings.”

Third-placed Zmarzlik was pleased with a solid start to his Speedway GP title defence as he paid tribute to Lublin and Lejonen teammate Woryna.

He said: “I am happy. It is always nice to start the season on the podium and I am happy with third place. Congrats to my friend Kacper because the first win is always the best moment. He will remember this day. He did the best job.”

Next up is the FIM Speedway GP of Czech Republic – Prague on Saturday, May 23. There will also be racing on Friday, May 22 as the sport’s top under-21 teams battle it out for FIM Speedway of Nations – SON2 gold.

Speedway GP’s Golden Race Jacket returns for 2026, with a special presentation to the winner of the WWK Schwaiger & Partner FIM Speedway GP of Germany – Landshut on Saturday night.

Originally inspired by the Tour de France’s storied yellow jersey, the Speedway GP World Championship leader donned the Golden Race Jacket from 2005 until 2009, with icons of the sport including Tony Rickardsson, Jason Crump and Nicki Pedersen all lining up in gold on their way to speedway’s biggest prize.

The tradition has continued in the Speedway European Championship – the winner of which qualifies for the following season’s Speedway GP series.

The Golden Race Jacket returns to Speedway GP after a 17-year absence. As part of Saturday’s podium ceremony, the Landshut winner will be presented with the Golden Race Jacket, which they will compete in at round two – the FIM Speedway GP of Czech Republic – Prague on May 23.

When a rider captures the World Championship lead after a Speedway GP event, they earn the right to don the Golden Race Jacket for the next round.

With sprint races taking place at Qualifying in Manchester R3, Wroclaw, Lodz, Vojens and Torun, the Golden Race Jacket may even change hands before the evening’s event has started if a new leader emerges after the sprint.

Richard Coleman, founder of new FIM Speedway global promoter Mayfield Sports Events, hopes the Golden Race Jacket’s return will shine a brighter spotlight on the Speedway GP title race.

He said: “The Golden Race Jacket is something speedway fans and followers of other sports with similar concepts will be familiar with, and we are pleased to bring it back for 2026.

“It makes the Speedway GP World Championship leader instantly identifiable on the track – both for fans old and new, not to mention for those chasing them down for the right to compete in the Golden Race Jacket.

“We hope the battle to wear it will be intense and that it will change hands many times throughout an exciting 2026 season.

“While I’m sure it will be a great moment for whoever claims the Golden Race Jacket in Landshut, it’s the final round in Torun when I’m sure every rider will dream of ending the night in gold with a World Championship gold medal to match.”

Czech star Jan Kvech returns to the FIM Speedway Grand Prix spotlight as wild card for the FIM Speedway GP of Czech Republic – Prague on Saturday, May 23.

The two-time Czech champion lines up in the No.16 race jacket as Prague’s Marketa Stadium celebrates a record-extending 30th straight season of staging Speedway GP – and its 32nd SGP round, having hosted action every year since 1997, including double-headers in both 2020 and 2021.

Kvech became a full-time SGP rider for 2024, qualifying at the 2023 FIM SGP Challenge in Gislaved, Sweden. He was then handed a permanent wild card by the SGP Commission for the 2025 season.

After serving as Czech Republic’s first full-time World Championship rider since Lukas Dryml raced in the 2008 series, Kvech is currently the second substitute star for Speedway GP. He could get called back into action at a later stage this season, if an SGP regular is ruled out due to injury, illness or other reasons.

As a junior, Kvech finished second in the 2022 SGP2 series – the FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship. He also led the Czech Under-21 side to a silver medal at the 2022 FIM Speedway of Nations – SON2 event in Vojens, Denmark.

Joining Kvech in Prague will be AK Marketa club teammates Adam Bubba Bednar and Daniel Klima, who line up as track reserves at No.17 and No.18 respectively.

Bednar is Czech speedway’s next great hope and finished fourth in the 2025 SGP2 series. Meanwhile, Klima’s career is also advancing, evidenced by a promising start to 2026 with British Cab Direct Championship club Plymouth.

This year’s FIM Czech Republic Speedway GP weekend also features the 2026 FIM Speedway of Nations – SON2 – Prague event, which sees the world’s top eight under-21 teams compete for the FIM Team Speedway Under-21 World Championship on Friday, May 22.

Great Britain international Tom Brennan admits “words can’t describe how excited and honoured I am” after being nominated as ATPI FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain – Manchester wild card.

Brennan wears the famous No.16 race jacket for both nights of Britain’s biggest speedway event on June 5 and 6, taking his place on the Speedway GP stage for the first time since 2024, when he raced in the FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain – Cardiff.

The 25-year-old was part of the GB teams that stormed to 2021 and 2024 FIM Speedway of Nations gold at Manchester’s National Speedway Stadium – the first of those ending the Lions’ 32-year wait for a world team title.

He joined forces with Speedway GP stars Robert Lambert and Dan Bewley on both occasions, but it will be every rider for himself in Manchester as the GB trio go from teammates to rivals.

Brennan can’t wait to test himself on the sport’s biggest stage once again. He said: “As soon as I got the call-up for it, it was like a dream come true, to be in the British GP. For me, it’s always a big goal and words can’t describe how excited and honoured I am to have the opportunity.

“It’s a double-header, so I get two cracks at it. It will be really cool to learn from everybody and learn from the whole experience. When I did Cardiff in 2024, that pushed my career on massively. Just to be around those top guys and in that environment is definitely important. To have two days of racing makes it even better.”

The Swindon-born star endured a tough winter after suffering a fractured left tibia and fibula, while training for an event in California. But he has bounced back well with British club Ipswich – a team he helped to Rowe Motor Oil Premiership championship glory in 2025. He also races for Metalkas 2. Ekstraliga side Bydgoszcz in Poland and Swedish champions Vastervik.

Brennan is no stranger to the National Speedway Stadium, having competed for Belle Vue from 2021 until 2023, playing his part in the Aces claiming the Premiership title in 2022.

Asked his expectations for the Manchester double-header, Brennan replied: “I would be satisfied with being in the mix, which is the main thing. During the races, I would like to be on the pace. I’d like to show the world again that I am touching this level of being world class.

“These guys are obviously good. Speedway GP riders are the best in the world. I just want to keep doing what I do, keep on racing hard and improve as much as I can.”

Joining Brennan in the line-up in Manchester are track reserves Anders Rowe and Dan Thompson, with the former SGP2 riders wearing the No.17 and No.18 race jackets respectively.

Limited tickets remain for two nights of ATPI FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain – Manchester action.
