At the start of 2024, Oxford Speedway uniquely entered a team at all three levels of league racing in British Speedway, entering the Oxford Spires at the top level of the sport, in addition to the Oxford Cheetahs in the second-tier Cab Direct Championship and the Oxford Chargers in the third-tier development league, the WSRA National League. Oxford Speedway repeated that bold three-team experiment for a second year this season.

But, due to new exciting forthcoming developments in 2026, with growing speculation that the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership and Cab Direct Championship are set to merge, there will only be two teams at Oxford in 2026 – the Cheetahs and the Chargers.

Oxford promoter Jamie Courtney said: “For two seasons, we’ve proudly entered Oxford Speedway at all three levels of the British Speedway pyramid. During that time, we’ve held over 30 meetings at home per season and become the busiest speedway stadium in the world.

“British Speedway is about to enter an exciting new era. With that in mind, I can confirm that the Spires will be involved in their final-ever meeting on Thursday against Leicester. The Cheetahs is the club’s traditional name and the name that our supporters would wish for us to continue. We will be entering just the Cheetahs and Chargers to race at the BetGoodwin Oxford Stadium in 2026.”

Admission is available at the early bird price of £23 for all adults, which increases to £25 on Race Day. All under-16s go free. A reminder that Oxford Speedway is online ticket sales only – tickets remain on sale on the website until the start-time of the meeting. Spectators are also reminded that they will need to pay £2 if they are planning to park in the Unipart car park.

The meeting was previously rained off on Thursday, September 4. Any tickets bought online for the original staging have automatically transferred across to the new date. Supporters will have received an email that also offered a refund if they cannot make the new date.

There are two meetings at the BetGoodwin Oxford Stadium this week, since the SD Timmo Car Sales powered by County Plumbing Supplies will host Redcar Bears in the second leg of their MAXiCab Knockout Cup semi-final at the BetGoodwin Oxford Stadium this coming Sunday (September 28). Please note the start-time of 5pm. The first leg is up at Redcar on Friday (September 26) and the aggregate winners will progress to the final to face either Poole or Glasgow.

There are four meetings in four days featuring Oxford sides, since the Real Mini Company Oxford Chargers are involved in their final WSRA National League fixture at Redcar on Saturday afternoon (September 27) at 3pm. Victory against the Middlesbrough Tigers would clinch a second NL title in three seasons for Chargers.

Polish Champion Maciej ‘Magic’ Janowski has confirmed his return to the Spires for 2025. Janowski had a tough start on his return to British Speedway in 2024 however, his determination and class on a speedway bike paid off in the latter stages of the season, top scoring for the Spires in five of their final six fixtures.

Team Manager Peter Schroeck paid tribute to the rider that he is:

“We feel privileged to have a rider of his calibre represent our club

“He is a great guy to work with and I am sure that he will hit the ground running from the off in 2025

“We are really pleased to have Magic back for his second stint with the club” he concluded.

Magic is the fifth returning rider in the 2025 Oxford Spires team and he joins Rohan Tungate, Charles Wright, Erik Riss and rising star Luke Killeen.

The German Champion joined the club in the early stages of the 2024 season and will now be back for his first full campaign at Cowley.

Riss said: “I really want to step it up and be consistent all the way through in 2025.

“I’m very excited to be back at Oxford next year and thank Peter (Schroeck) and Jamie (Courtney) for putting their trust in me.

“I really enjoyed my time at Oxford in 2024 and we had a great team. We will also have a great team next year and I am already excited to be riding at Sandy Lane again.”

Harris skippered the Spires in the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership as top-flight racing returned to Cowley in 2024, with the team finishing just one place short of the play-offs.

The club recently announced the return of Australian Champion Rohan Tungate for a second season, with youngster Luke Killeen staying on as Rising Star.

Said Harris: “I can confirm that I am not in Oxford’s plans for 2025, but thank everyone involved in the club for 2024.

“A special thank you to all the Oxford fans for the support as I captained the 2024 Spires team.

Tungate joined the Spires this year for his return to regular UK racing, and he was voted their Rider of the Year by supporters having come up trumps in several last-heat deciders at Cowley.

He becomes their second confirmed signing for 2025 with Luke Killeen already having been secured for the Rising Star berth.

Tungate said: “It was an easy decision to return to Oxford in 2025, after a good year riding for the club this season. It’s the most enjoyable time I’ve had riding in England.

“A big thank you to everyone involved in the Oxford Speedway club and I can’t wait for next season.”

Kemp joins the Cowley club having started the season with rivals Leicester, whilst Kerr drops out after a tough run of results of late.

The change comes into force for this Monday’s Sandy Lane fixture where Oxford face Sheffield.

Spires manager Peter Schroeck said: “Lewis has admitted that since returning from his injury, he has not been able to score at the level he was at the start of the season, and I felt that we needed to do something to maintain our push for a play-off spot.

“Lewis is a great rider and I want to publicly thank him for all his efforts under difficult circumstances.

“This is an opportunity for Drew to demonstrate that he is capable of scoring good points in this league.”

The 36-year-old will make his club debut on Thursday when Spires travel to Sheffield for their rearranged ROWE Motor Oil Premiership fixture against the Tigers.

Cook has made a flying start to his 2024 campaign, scoring 41 points from only 16 rides for Championship club Workington. And the 2017 British Champion said he was feeling in great condition on and off the bike ahead of his first Spires ride.

“I’m really grateful for this opportunity and thank Peter (Schroeck) and the Oxford management for making the call,” said Cook. “I’ve put a lot of effort into my preparation for 2024, and so far the results have been pleasing.

“Oxford has been a real success story since the club reopened two years ago, so to be part of the operation in the coming months is exciting for me and I’m looking forward to Thursday’s trip to Sheffield.

“We have some big meetings coming up in May and as a group we’re determined to continue our positive start to the season and strengthen our position inside the play-off frame.”

Cook will be eligible for all five of Spires’ Premiership fixtures in May. Following Thursday’s trip to Sheffield, the club hosts Leicester on Bank Holiday Monday (May 6) with a visit to the National Speedway Stadium scheduled the following week (May 13).

Aces return to OX4 on May 23 before Spires take on Leicester at Beaumont Park four days later.

Team Manager Peter Schroeck added: “Craig is all class and has a strong track record since making the switch from Motocross 16 years ago.

“His commitment during the winter is clear to see with a number of strong performances in the Championship, so we’re really pleased to have him onboard.”

The Witches have started the season strongly with two wins from two in the league at Foxhall and they have already tasted victory on the road with a win at Leicester in the first leg of their Knockout Cup quarter-final first leg tie. Thursday’s test promises to be a tough one with both teams yet to taste defeat in 2024.

The visitors are at full strength for this fixture, and it is a place Jordan Jenkins knows well with the youngster having ridden for Oxford in previous seasons.

Ipswich ‘Tru7 Group’ Witches team manager Ritchie Hawkins gives us his pre-match thoughts…

“It is our first trip to Oxford for a very long time and I’m delighted to see them back in the league and doing so well since they re-opened a couple of seasons ago. It will be a new test for us, they have built a very good side and have started the season well, they look a very strong side. After winning at Leicester, I said to the boys if we can win there, we can win anywhere. We have shown our own strengths at the start of the season, and we will hope to carry that on at Oxford.

“It will be a new track for some of the boys and unusually in speedway the lesser experienced riders will have probably done more laps at the track than the more experienced guys. Jordan has raced at Oxford many times and hopefully his knowledge of the circuit can help us. I’m sure the top guys will quickly adapt to a different track and Keynan has the experience of learning new tracks last year, so it is another for him and hopefully he picks it up quickly because it could be an important role he has now he is down at number six. We have got a great bond going already throughout the team and I’m sure we will all work together to help each other out to get our heads round the track quickly.

“Last week we lost a true Ipswich legend in John Louis. To start a career so late and achieve so much is remarkable but to be so highly regarded by so many is even more remarkable. John set the standard for future Witches to follow, and we will continue to strive and achieve these standards.”
