The 20-year-old joins the Young Stars with strong family ties to the sport. Cossey is the grandson of former racer Trevor Hedge, who began his career at Norwich before riding for King’s Lynn in 1975, and the nephew of another ex-rider, the late Gavin Hedge.

Although this will be Cossey’s official NDL debut season, he already gained valuable experience in the third tier during 2025. That included guest appearances for the Young Stars, featuring in their home meeting against Leicester and their title-clinching away victory at Kent.

Young Stars boss Jason Pipe is pleased to see Cossey step into the team on a permanent basis. Speaking to the King’s Lynn Speedway website, Pipe said:

“I’m delighted to have Kenzie in the team this coming season. He was our No.8 in 2025, so I’m so happy to be able to give him a team spot in 2026.”

Pipe also highlighted Cossey’s attitude and the benefits of team familiarity, adding:

“Kenzie is a lovely lad and he will be very popular with his team-mates and is always willing to listen and takes on board what is said to him.

Having one of his best mates, Jake Mulford, in the same team will help Kenzie massively and it’s a great start to bringing a great team spirit to the side.”

The Young Stars manager believes Cossey’s local connection will play a key role in his development:

“He is another local rider who really can’t wait to race for his local club. It’s a dream come true for him.”

Cossey enters the side on a 3.25 average, having ridden in four NDL meetings last season as an unattached 3.00-point guest. Pipe is confident that figure will rise, saying:

“From what I’ve seen from Kenzie so far, I know he will certainly improve on the 3.25 average he is coming into the team on.”

While his starting position in the team is yet to be confirmed, Pipe is unconcerned about where the youngster lines up:

“At this moment in time, I’m unsure if Kenzie will start the season at reserve or in the main body of the team. Either way, I know Kenzie will have no qualms with what position he rides at.”

Cossey himself is thrilled to be officially joining the Young Stars and reflected positively on his experiences with the club last year. Speaking via the King’s Lynn Speedway website, he said:

“I’ve grown up around speedway and grasstrack with the family connections, I’ve always been surrounded by bikes since I was little.”

He explained how his focus has shifted increasingly towards speedway:

“Whilst my racing career has mainly been grasstrack, I’ve always been looking to give speedway a good go. I really enjoyed speedway last year and then I found myself riding speedway more than grasstrack.”

Looking ahead to the season, Cossey has clear goals:

“I want to polish my riding up and try to increase my average by the end of the season. That’s the aim – you know you’re moving in the right direction if your average goes up.”

He also praised Pipe’s management style and the atmosphere within the squad:

“Jason has told me there’s no pressure, I just have to do my best. It’s going to be nice to be in the team with people I know – it should be fun and I’m really looking forward to it. I can’t wait to get going.”

Whilst the full team building criteria, including the points limit, will be ratified at the AGM of British Speedway Promoters’ Ltd next month, it is already known that the requirement for each club to track a rider from the Rising Star list will continue.

The initiative, which began in 2021, guarantees that each Premiership team will start the season with a young British rider in the No.7 position, and over the past four years there have been several success stories.
Premiership clubs are firmly behind the Rising Star concept with discussions already ongoing over the ways in which it could evolve over the coming seasons beyond 2025.

For next year, the Rising Star criteria remains unchanged: a rider on the Rising Star list must be aged 23 or under as of January 1, 2025, and they must not have a current Premiership average which exceeds 4.00.
This means that from the 2024 Rising Star list, Anders Rowe and Dan Thompson have moved out of the category as both riders ended the season with an average in excess of 4.00, racing for King’s Lynn and Ipswich respectively.

Both will now be eligible for team spots in the Premiership with a 25% discount on their averages, compared to the normal 2.5% for British riders.
Clubs who completed the 2024 season with a Rising Star who is also eligible for 2025 were given the option of ‘protecting’ that rider and automatically declaring the same Rising Star for next season.

The remaining Rising Stars were then selected from the available list of riders, with clubs selecting in reverse order from the final standings in the 2024 Premiership.

Protection was taken on their 2024 Rising Stars by the following clubs:
Belle Vue – Jake Mulford
Leicester – Sam Hagon
Oxford – Luke Killeen

The remaining Rising Star selections for 2025 were made in the following order:
Birmingham – Jason Edwards
King’s Lynn – Ashton Boughen
Ipswich – Jordan Jenkins
Sheffield – Leon Flint

It should also be noted that riders eligible for a Rising Star position are not precluded from taking a team place elsewhere in a Premiership line-up if not selected as a Rising Star.

The full Rising Star list will be published prior to the new season and extends well beyond the riders selected. Those on the list will be eligible to come in if team changes are required, or to take guest bookings.

The UK’s top-fight will be known as the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership with immediate effect – and the action is set to hot up with six of the seven clubs due to be in action this Thursday (March 21).

Established in 1995, ROWE is a premium German oil brand, focusing on the development of high-performance engine oils and winter chemicals for the automotive and motorsport industries.

Their comprehensive product range is available in more than 80 countries and has received numerous approvals from renowned manufacturers.

The company was founded in Florsheim-Dalsheim before relocating to Bubenheim five years later, with production starting at the newly built Worms plant in 2014.

A crucial aspect of ROWE’s business is the sustainability of their manufacturing process, such that when their oil leaves the factory, it is net-zero at source. Their advanced plant generates its own power and re-uses heat, using modern energy management and process control systems.

ROWE products are now distributed worldwide, including in 30 European countries and with subsidiaries in China, the USA and South Africa.

And in order to facilitate knowledge transfer for product development, the company operate their own racing team, ROWE RACING, with a focus on endurance racing in the GT World Challenge and the Nurburgring Endurance Series.

Director of UK Operations Jeremy Aston-Phillips said: “It’s fair to say that although ROWE make motorcycle products, automotive products and industrial products, it is largely an unknown brand in the UK.

“Kings” was of course the Kent Speedway club’s name throughout their tenure at the nearby (now sadly lost to the sport) Central Park Stadium between 2013 & 2021; but for the two campaigns which followed, it was as ‘Royals’ that a Kent team contested the NDL.

With the decision made not to carry on under SCB jurisdiction, the club will go into action (like the Isle of Wight before them) in 2024, by racing under the NORA (National Off-Road Racing Association) banner in competitions and with opponents which are to be announced later. And it’ll be the ‘Kings’ nickname, along with the iconic Invicta symbol back on the race jackets when they roar back into action.

Taking the helm (after previous promoter Si Kellow decided to step down from the hot seat) will be Steve Ribbons. And it’s a real ‘Back to the Future’ move there also as the Epping-based 57-year-old was actually the man who brought Conference League racing back to Iwade in 2004. Ribbons commented,

“People will know that over the past few years I’ve been working hard to take Speedway back to the track I first attended the sport at (and fell it love with it) back in 1978, Rye House. That battle is still very much going on and I remain 100% committed to bringing the sport back there. As part of keeping the Rye House Speedway name in the consciousness of the public I was badgering Si (Kellow) and Iwade track owner Graham Arnold to run a meeting against a Rockets side.

“So when I heard that Si was stepping down at Sittingbourne/Iwade due to health reasons and no one else seemed to be interested in running the club, I decided to step in rather than see the club close”.

Ribbons went on,

“I feel it is time to put something back into this excellent club – there’s been Speedway at Iwade every year since 1970, making it one of the longest continually-running tracks in Europe and I feel with the right vision rather than stagnating it needs to be driven forward in the coming years. An improved financial base is the key to achieving this and I can offer a sound business sense from my working life and over forty years of acquired knowledge of lower league Speedway.

“The NORA competitions that are going to be happening in 2024 along with other clubs coming on board will offer something different & exciting and give the loyal Kent public something really to enjoy over the forthcoming Speedway season”.

There’s also welcome news that the mid-day tapes-up deployed on Sundays under the previous Royals’ regime the past two seasons is to change in 2024 to a more traditional and customer-friendly 2pm start time. And the first meeting is confirmed for Sunday April 14th.: a full 15-heat challenge match against traditional local rivals, Eastbourne Eagles.

Ribbons has gone even further back in time to come up with an appropriate new club motto for the restored Kings – back in fact to the ancient language of Latin to announce “ex cinere phoenix!”.
