Great news for Speedway fans in the South East with the news that the Kent Eagles will be running race meetings out of Iwade in 2026 with six meetings being run under the jurisdiction of Nora.

On their Social Media, the club said:

After a recent management re structure, and the separation of Kent Eagle Speedway Club and Sussex Eagles motorcycle club, it gives us great pleasure to announce there will be speedway action at Iwade stadium this year.

After such a successful 2025 we needed to come back for another season, and we can all breathe a sigh of relief as this will happen now.

Unfortunately we are not racing under the SCB though, but will run under the NORA banner for 2026 with 6 home meetings proposed.

We hope all of our fans will continue to support us for another season of awesome racing.

We will be putting together an exciting team ready to do battle with our opponents.

Further details will follow soon on the structure of the meetings and potential opponents shortly.

Look forward to seeing you all soon.

With the summer season just around the corner, the Wightlink Warriors management are delighted to announce their 2025 team that will compete across the summer in the team events.

The Wightlink Warriors will be led again by true Wightlink Warriors stalwart Arran Butcher. Arran has long been an island favourite participating in many different motorcycle classes. This year he is busier than ever with grass track, beach racing, NDL, NDT and now the Wightlink Warriors, but he is sure to turn on the style and pace at one of his favourite tracks.

Fans favourite Ben Morley returns to Smallbrook for another season. Ben has been a regular on the island for a while now and has always been part of the backbone for the team. Mr. Consistent home and away, fans are sure to be delighted with his return to the Wightlink Warriors.

Henning Loof, returns to bring his own German style back to the team in 2025. It is true to say that he really enjoyed his time last season and immediately asked to return. Popular on and off track he is always good value and great to watch.

Island born and bred, Morgan Williams is back in the team for 2025. Morgan, who came through the My First Skid School, has progressed from track team to main team pretty quickly. However, he has been out with a shoulder injury of late and will be looking to pick up on his excellent winter form to start bringing home some more points for his beloved Wightlink Warriors team.

Charlie Southwick, another from the My First Skid hall of fame, 15 years old, and really has caught the eye of the sport across the country. He is making good steady progress this season and will be busting to do well for the Wightlink Warriors this year.

Darryl Ritchings will be another fans favourite quickly. Returning to the island after a fabulous return to both speedway and grass track racing following a couple of excellent sessions at Smallbrook with My First Skid. Darryl’s having a great season, and we are delighted he is coming back to the island.

The rider list is not the riding order, and we will expand on the introductions to the riders in the coming days to give you further information about them. But for now, please welcome your 2025 Wightlink Warriors to Smallbrook.

The Wightlink Warriors promotion are delighted to release their provisional summer fixture list starting on Tuesday 29th July at Smallbrook Stadium on the Isle of Wight. For this season, the focus returns to team racing with four team events, one 3 Team Tournament representing the clubs that our former Team Manager Steve Piper was closest to, the popular Best Pairs where anyone can become a team manager for the night, and our NORA Individual British Championships.

The club will continue to stage support events too, giving fans an insight into other oval track racing disciplines providing a night full of entertainment, and of course allowing juniors more track time before the events each week thus maintaining our youth development ethos.

Wightlink Warriors co-owner Barry Bishop said, “I’m totally thrilled with the schedule that we have put together for this season and I am hopeful that it will please those who want team racing as well as those who enjoy seeing other race formats and disciplines at Smallbrook. Either way, we are hopeful that a new impetus has been found, and we move forward together for a great season, and we are excitedly looking forward to announcing the 2025 Wightlink Warriors very shortly.

As we have mentioned before, we would still welcome more sponsorship to get us through this difficult year, and additional volunteer support on race days, so if you can support us please email Speedwayontheisland@Yahoo.co.uk for details. Running speedway on the island has unique challenges due to its location and this year things have changed, so we welcome as much support as people can give, be that financial or physical. However, let’s not detract from the excitement of the 2025 season that is fast approaching and our new race day of Tuesday. Most of all, we look forward to welcoming you all back to our beautiful island stadium, hopefully “bathed in sunshine”

The fixtures start on July 29th and run through until September 9th 2025.

We will race on a Tuesday in 2025 allowing access to a greater number of riders as this is a quiet fixture night in the UK. In addition, we hope to stage the British GT140 providing we can find a date in their busy schedule.

Edward Kennett showed exactly why he was out and out favourite to retain his British Upright Championship crown, by doing just that as he stormed to 5 straight wins as the Smallbrook stadium last night.

On a night when the only rain cloud in the UK perched itself firmly over the Island, Kennett showed that he has lost none of his class as he cruised to the title.

Whilst Kennett was having things his own way, there was plenty going on behind his in the less that far from perfect weather conditions.

With races staged over three laps, the first race produced plenty of passing between Sean Bickley,

Felton passed Bickley for the final time to lead as they went over the line, however the flag marshal put out the final lap flag and the referee immediately put the red lights on, correctly giving the win to the former Stoke Potter Felton.

Kennett duly won heat 2 in a fast time of 57.9.

Wayne Broadhurst showed his liking for the conditions by winning heat 3 before flying Australian Nigel Flatman won the forth.

Kennett made it two out of two beating Ben Phillips in the 5th before Flatman won the sixth after a good tussle with Daniel Owen.

However disaster struck the Felixstowe Flyer, Flatman’s bike completely seized after the race had finished, ruling him out of the rest of the meeting.

Heat seven saw Broadhurst beat Bickley and then Felton also joined the leader board winning his second race.

Heat nine saw Broadhurst head the leader board as he beat Phillips to move onto nine points, he was the joined by Kennett on nine as he comfortably won the tenth.

By now the rain was in driving force, sweeping across the circuit, but the riders to their credit were happy to continue.

Bickley got himself back in contention by winning heat eleven, before Felton joined Broadhurst and Kennett on nine points by winning the twelfth heat.

Phillips gave himself a shot at a rostrum place by winning heat thirteen, before Broadhurst made it four win on the bounce taking the fourteenth.

Kennett joined him taking heat 15 from Bickley and Felton did likewise in the sixteenth.

With one round of races left we had three riders all on 12 points and they were all due to meet in the final heat!

Phillips took his tally to eleven by taking heat 17 and Martin Stacey moved up to nine winning the 18th

Heat nineteen saw Bickley go it alone as his three opponents had all been forced out with mechanical issues, moving him up to 12 points and still in with a chance of the podium.

So it all came down to the final heat, Kennett shot into the lead, but the race had to be stopped after Broadhurst took an awkward looking tumble on turn two and was disqualified from the re=start.

Kennett made his customary flying start to retain his title with Felton taking the runners-up position.

Broadhurst fall meant that there was to be a run-off for third place between him and Bickley, but with track conditions now making the track unfit to continue, the race was not staged and Broadhurst four raced wins meant that his was technically third but the position was shared.

The British Woman’s Championship, was a bit more straight forward and saw a new champion as twice winner Katie Gordon was pushed into second place by the highly entertaining and deserving winner Rachel Hellowell.

Hellowell, stormed to an excellent unbeaten four wins to take the title with 12 points Gordon’s 9 points giving her second place.

Talk of the town and the Island though was third place Tia Brant, 15 year old Tia from Worthing has only been riding the 500cc machines a matter of weeks and recorded 6 points, comfortably beating twice runner-up Steph Whitlock from the Island into 4th spot.

Anastasia Sallee finished 5th.

All in all, 25 heats of racing was staged within 90 minutes before the rain made racing too difficult, an achievement in itself and once again full credit must go to the staff and volunteers for doing such an excellent job.

The 2024 Wightlink Warriors NORA Speedway season will start this Thursday 27th June at Smallbrook Stadium when the sport returns for its 8th season under the stewardship of Martin Widman and Barry Bishop on the Isle of Wight. This season sees at least 10 meetings (June to October) held at the 385m track including team racing, individual meetings, Island Masters 500, GT140 and Flat Track racing.

Thursday’s meeting is when IOW Speedway remembers long time club stalwart, the late Vince Mapley, in the first leg of the Vince Mapley Memorial meeting – an annual event. And it’s sure to be a thriller against one of the club’s biggest foes, the Cradley ARH Heathens. The West Midlanders have listed a strong side captained by Tom Spencer, with Aussie Matt Marson in the number one race jacket and Island-resident and huge Smallbrook favourite, the ex-Warrior making a surprise racing comeback, Danno Verge.

The new look 2024 Wightlink Warriors are led by reigning Island Masters champion Arran Butcher and have a combination of local Smallbrook-nurtured talent in Chad Wirtzfeld & Morgan Williams and a cosmopolitan flavour with a debut for German rider, Henning Loof, Steve Piper’s charges will need to be at their very best to get any kind of lead against the ARH Heathens who will be looking to win over this two legged scrap.

Promoter Barry Bishop articulates the enthusiasm all at Isle Of Wight Speedway have for the new season, “It’s great to be back! We’ve been working hard in the off-season to maintain the stadium while maximising the usage of the track for our famed ‘My First Skid’ Speedway school and with the Winter Series. These have allowed others to experience riding our unique circuit as well as in our team’s case, dialling their bikes in ready for the NORA season. Now it’s time to get the Warriors back on track!”

It’s very much a double header on Thursday with the other event on the race menu being the inaugural British J.A.P. Championship. Rained off from last year, this is actually the 2023 event (with places up for grabs to qualify for the ‘24 event being staged later this season) as well as the main business of taking the national crown on these iconic bikes. The 500cc J.A.P. is the most famous machine in Speedway history and riders mounted on the London-built bike finished on top of the World Championship rostrum from 1936 all the way to 1963.

With eight immaculately restored J.A.P. bikes ridden by some of the top veteran riders this will be some spectacle.

Event organiser Dave Johnson commented, “I was watching some riders a couple of years ago racing their old J.A.P. machines in a Veterans event and they made the most fantastic noise and smell which brought the memories flooding back of the Golden Age of the sport. It got me thinking what a great meeting it would be if we could put on a show with J.A.P. Speedway bikes. I approached Barry Bishop about the idea and here we are two years later. I’m certain that planting this seed we can grow this into something very big.”

The line up of riders are:

Wightlink Warriors.
1. Arran Butcher (c), 2. Sonny Springer, 3. Chad Wirtzfeld, 4. Henning Loof, 5. Jacob Clouting, 6. Morgan Williams

Cradley ARH Heathens.
1. Matt Marson, 2. James Laker, 3. Luke Harris, 4. Danno Verge, 5. Tom Spencer (c), 6. Joshua Couzins

2023 British J.A.P. Championship.
Andy Hickman, Dean Felton, Martin Stacey, Keith Cornell, Alec Gooch, Giles Dismore, Rob Snow, Graham Knowler, Reserve: Dave Harvey

Gates open at 5.30pm, Junior & Development racing on track from 6.15pm with the main events from 7pm. Entry is Adults £14, Concessions £11 and accompanied children under 16 go free.

The Kent Kings promotion in conjunction with the Supporters Club have announced the 2024 Speedway season finale at the Old Gun Site track will be the ‘Supporters Trophy’ individual event with the Supporters Club putting up a first prize of £250.

The event will be held over the traditional 20 heats format with a full 16 riders and is provisionally booked for a Sunday in October.

Promotor Steve Ribbons in announcing the event commented,

“I can’t thank the Supporters Club run by Dianne Farmer enough for the tremendous backing they’ve already shown this year, paying the riders’ fuel & oil and giving other financial support. And remember both the Speedway club itself and the Supporters Club were only formed at the start of the season!”

Ribbons explained that, as much as possible, supporters can have the decision on the line-up of riders they want to see in action at the inaugural Supporters Trophy event,

“Supporters can email in to commercial@kent-speedway.co.uk suggestions of riders names who have appeared at the Iwade track this year who they would like to see again. Should anyone catch their eye in the forthcoming meetings they can vote again or speak to Di Farmer at home meetings and leave her the name of the rider and the promotion will do their best to make sure those that are voted for get to be in the meeting, other commitments allowing.”

The long-anticipated return to track action of the Kent Kings team happens this Sunday, 14th. April (2pm start time), with a tantalising challenge match against Eastbourne Eagles in a local Derby which will bring many memories back to long-time followers of the sport in the neighbouring Speedway hotbed counties of Kent and Sussex.

The two clubs have in common that they’ve both been off-track for around two & a half years now– the Kings losing their Central Park Stadium home at the close of the 2021 season; with the Eagles failing to complete that same season when they folded due to financial difficulties midway through the 2021 campaign.

For the Kings it’s meant a change of home track, moving to compete in NORA League competition this year at the Old Gun Site circuit in Iwade and fans are excited to see them back, with improvements made to the long-established training circuit (open in fact since 1970) and a programme of exciting matches to come.

Meanwhile for the ‘Save Eastbourne Speedway’ Group led by Eagles loyalists David Graveling and Michael Gray it’s about raising awareness to their plight, with hopes of either being able to return to their Arlingrton home or finding an alternative venue in Sussex. They bring a strong-looking sextet to take on the Kings on Sunday.

Gray commented,“We are hoping for a great turn-out of Eagles fans at Iwade this weekend. That would send the message far and wide that the Sussex sporting public want the Eagles back.”

That the sport at Arlington was for many years a huge catalyst for local talent is shown by the Eagles side tracking three extremely locally-based riders, Vinnie Foord, Nick Laurence and their captain, twice British Youth Champion, Nathan Ablitt. A big draw for those travelling Eastbourne fans is the unexpected return to the track of their former favourite, Jake Knight.
The hosts have put together a team which is captained by a former British Youth Champion also, in Rhys Naylor; and at number one have Kings’ stalwart (record appearance & points scorer for the club), the twice National League Riders’ Champion, Ben Morley.

Morley was an ‘original’ King from 2013 and he’s joined by two others who can date their Kings lineage to those early days at Central Park, Sam Woods and 2014 British U19 Championship rostrum man, Jack Kingston. The team is completed by 2023 Iwade Second Half Series winner, Ashford-based Nathan Hargrave and making a Kent debut, Sam Ward.

Kings’ Team Manager Ben Clifton is bullish about the prospect of his charges taking on the Sussex side,

“We know that the Eagles have chosen to come to us with a very strong team, adding the experienced pairing of Ryan Kinsley & Arran Butcher to the Eastbourne-connected riders in their line up – but we are fully up for the challenge. There’s a brilliant team spirit in our camp and so much positivity around the club with a new Supporters Club formed also, so we are really keen to get going and are up for this first challenge.”

Following the 15 heats of the main match, they’ll be a trophy up for grabs in a second half individual, the South Coast Cup, sponsored by the Sussex Eagles Motorcycle Club.

The club have announced also that ‘Blue Light’ workers can enter at a concessionary rate – those seeking to take advantage of this offer will need to produce work IDs to show they work for the NHS, Ambulance Service, Fire Service or Police.
Admission prices are £13; £10 concessions (pensioners, disabled, ‘Blue Light’ workers); and accompanied children 15 years and under free.

Southend-born racer Ben Morley will once again be at number one for the Kent Kings as they roar into NORA action in 2024.

One of the original septet that graced the shale in the club’s inaugural season at Central Park back in 2013, Morley went on to become the Kings’ record points scorer in two spells: between 2013 and 2015 in the National League and then in the final season, this time in the second tier, in 2021.

Whilst 2024 signals a new beginning for the Kings, Ben is looking forward to leading from the front for the Garden of England side into this new-look future and at the same time appreciates how he has become a fan favourite with the Kentish public.

Speaking on his time with the Kings Morley said,

“When I first joined in 2013, it was a fresh new start and I have had some amazing times at Central Park with great memories and friends coming out of there and now at Iwade.”

Iwade is now also a familiar set-up for Morley having spent the past two seasons there with the Kent Royals and, while looking forward to linking up alongside a largely familiar set of teammates, he reflects on his career on the south side of the QE2 Bridge,

“I’ve always loved racing for Kent, especially now with it being my most local track. And I’m looking forward to another year riding at Iwade and in the Kings’ race jacket which means so much to me.

“With matches in the fixtures announced so far against three of my old clubs, Isle of Wight, Rye House and the Hammers it’s going to be an exciting season.”

For a rider high up in the all-time rankings for points scoring in Speedway’s third tier and twice the Divisional Riders’ Champion there’s obviously an element of change in the racing he’ll be involved in but the recently-turned 30-year-old is typically laid back about the difference this makes,

“It’s going to be a bit different being in the NORA League, but as long as I can race my bike, I’m happy. Hopefully, we have a good season with plenty of entertainment and no injuries.”

Morley and Co. will head into action in just four weeks’ time (Sunday April 14th) when Kent take on old local rivals Eastbourne at Iwade with a 2pm start time.

And new promoter Steve Ribbons makes a call for riders interested in joining up with the NORA revolution,

“We have slots available for riders to take place in our full second halves – starting on the 14th. Anyone interested should contact me via our web-site www. kent-speedway.co.uk or call our General Manager Derek Barclay on 07969 578772.
